The Olympics – A brief (and rare) History
It is easy to get carried away by the excitement of the modern Olympics. With so much drama, So the romance dynamics is difficult to imagine this show around the world, nothing less than perfect. But you do not dig very deep to discover humble origins and often the particular time. Indeed, it took several decades of Hollywood magic to generate the polished sports event that we take for granted today.
In Roman legend, the original Olympic Games were founded by Heracles anything, son of Zeus great man, probably as an opportunity to demonstrate their strength before God as the ladies. An alternative legend tells the story of Pelops, a Greek romance, and the father of the Olympic Games. In a desperate attempt to win the hand of his girlfriend, Hippodamia, Pelops challenged her father, King Pisa, in a chariot race. To give you the edge, Pelops replaced the king key element of the wax, which melted during the race, throwing the king from his car, killing. After winning the race, the young girl, and the whole empire, Pelops declared this the first time at the Olympics – always inculcate qualities of fraud and deception for the games.
The Ancient Games had their own version of celebrity appearances, including Homer, Socrates, Aristotle and Hippocrates. Even Plato returned on games, winning not one but two gold medals in the ceremony of the struggle of origin "Games" really play a game, a dash 192 meters known as "The Stadium" – which was performed entirely naked (yet after giving Heracles an excuse to leg orders). In fact, the word "gymnasium" comes from the Greek "gymnos", which literally means "school to exercise naked. "Subsequent additions to the Olympics included boxing, jumping, discus and javelin, which gladly clothing. The exception to this list of exciting events is the marathon. The execution of celebrities, including the torch, were never part of the Games Ancient Olympic, and were not added to the site to more than 1,500 years later.
The ancient games lasted nearly 1200 years, at least 776 BC to 393 AD, when Roman Emperor Theodosius I, a Christian, abolished Games because he thought they were pagan and evil. And if the Olympic Games slept for a thousand years, until 1892, when a French boy named Pierre de Coubertin proposed the idea at a meeting of the Union of Athletic Sports in Paris. The launch has failed miserably. But ever the optimist, Pierre tried two years later, this time before a meeting of 79 delegates representing 9 countries. The delegates voted unanimously in favor of revitalization, and so in 1896 in the city of Athens, the Olympics were reborn.
The 1896 Games were a disaster. As the games have been released shortly, never received the necessary international support. Competitors are not supported by their respective countries, and in fact were forced to travel to Greece for its own account. Several participants were tourists who happened to be vacationing in Greece.
Due to poor planning, the 1896 Games held in very cold weather, but was composed entirely of "summer" events. In his first book on the wall, 100 years of Olympic swimming, Kelly Gonsalves describes the swim first place: "Not only battle waves of 12 feet, but the climate in Greece was unusually cold and the water was cold 55 degrees Fahrenheit. "The book tells the story of Garner Williams, an American swimmer, who, despite spending a fortune to train and travel to the Olympics, jumped out of the water After a few moments of the race by shouting "I'm freezing."
Other athletes also had difficult experiences in the Olympic Games. After having walked from Rome to Athens, a trip a month, the Italian athlete Carlo Airoldi was banned from the games because was a professional. As the book strange moments Olympics describes Dorando Pietri was denied because the marathon gold a staff willing to help cross the line.
The Olympics are generally considered as a manifestation of unity the world, if history would be something more to say. The official Olympic flag, designed in 1914 by Pierre de Coubertin, contains five interconnected rings, symbolize the five "major continents of the world", leaving it completely from the map of Africa. 1936 brought the games pre-war Germany, an opportunity demonstrate the superiority of the Aryan race or what he thought Adolf Hitler, who has campaigned for many games. Of course, several remember Jesse Owens, who teaches African-American who heads with pride to the Germans a thing or two. The victory of Josef Barthel of Luxembourg in 1952 was greeted with an awkward silence. Because nobody expects a Luxembourg athlete to win the orchestra to the medal ceremony is The score not the national anthem Luxenbourg.
Over the years, several attempts have been made to improve the Olympics. The two racing boat motor and bicycle polo were introduced and subsequently withdrawn Games. Hollywood was literally going to add the Winter Games 1960. Walt Disney has been elected to head the organizing committee during the opening ceremony, which included special effects statues of ice, and the release of 2,000 white doves.
Scams, politics, triumphs and disappointments: these words apply well at the Olympics in modern times to the old. If the Olympics have taught us anything, it's that society never changes, even After thousands of years. If Pelops could visit our games today, then it might be impressed with our fireworks bright and Hollywood illusions, I would feel very comfortable with the actual game on the screen: human nature.
