U.S. Middle Distance Disaster running on 2008 Beijing Olympic Games

Copyright © 2008 Ed Bagley

Despite all the American major success at the Olympics in Beijing 2008, there was nothing to celebrate their middle-distance runners in track athletics.

U.S. hopes rode on the shoulders of Bernard Lagat and Ryan Hall. Kenyan Lagat became a born U.S. citizen and has earned its evidence competitive internationally, and Hall was our hope born in the United States and perhaps the victory medal in the marathon. Lagat of gold 1500 and 5000 meter runs.

Ultimately, none of them was even close enough to think of a medal of smell. Worse, competitors men and women of the United States 800, 1,500, 5,000, 10,000, 3,000 barriers and the marathon could muster only one of 36 possible medals.

If it was not for Shalane Flanagan finishing third in the 10,000, the U.S. has not won a single medal the middle distance events. His 30:22.22 was good enough clock for the bronze medal and an American record.

The best result seventh place next to America was Shannon Rowbury in the 1,500 m in 4:03.58. Rowbury 7th place was the best result ever recorded by a American woman in an Olympic 1,500 m final.

The United States has not even reached the final labels for men and 800 women and 1,500 men. Lagat was eliminated in the semi-final of 1500. The medalists of the 1500 clocked 3:32.94, and 3:33.11 3:34.16.

Lagat has been considered among the favorites in the race, having won both the1500 and 5000 titles in the 2007 World Championships in Osaka (Japan) last year. He went 3:34.77 in 1500 and 13:45.87 in 5000.

On the way Olympic 5000, Lagat was the silver, finishing ninth in 13:26.89. Apparently, competition at World Championships in Osaka was not as difficult as it was at the Olympics since Lagat won the 1,500 in 13:45.87. Medallists Olympics 5000 clocked 12:57.82, 13:02.80 and 13:06.22.

Legacy is known for its terminal velocity. Both the 1500 and 5000 U.S. Olympic Trials (Who won), simply from a slow and just sprint the last lap. After having his 5000 Olympic effort, I put the last Lagat 400-52 and change. The problem was, unlike the trials in the United States, all competitors at the Olympic Games ran as fast or faster.

For all the hoopla and praise the World Championship, World Championships are not just big, not so important, not competitive and not as fast as the Olympic Games. There reason why the Olympics have been held only once every four years. When it became clear that Lagat did not perform at their best, then taught injured left Achilles tendon. Whatever.

Hopes were high for Ryan Hall because in April of this year in 5th place Flora London Marathon in 2:06.17, beating his own record for the fastest marathon ever by an American citizen by birth. The winner of the marathon at the Olympics Beijing has to set an Olympic record 2:06.32.

best finish of the United States in the marathon Dathan Ritzenhein in 2:11.59 summer. Hall tenth of sales in 2:12.33 and Brian was 22nd in 2:16.07. Both Ritzenhein and Hall gained valuable experience in Olympic competition, but no medals.

America could not buy a medal in one of the 10,000 men and obstacles eventsthe 3000, and 5000 women, 3000 Steeplechase and the marathon. Such is the state average distance race in the United States in 2007.

Our American record holder in the mile, Alan Webb, did not even qualify for the U.S. Olympic team in 1500. Looks like a great plan training Webb went wrong. Whatever.

When the day of the selection Olympic or Olympic finals comes, you have to compete despite physical condition, mental or emotional. You are right or not. You medals in the competition or not. The Olympics is not a dress rehearsal.

Can we expect improvement of middle-distance runners in the U.S.? I 'm glad you finally asked. There are two answers to this question. First, and probably still is hope. Secondly, reminds one of movies cowboy with a crew of two, is slim and none.

At least half of our distance runners a real desire and conviction who can actually beat foreign runners, we will always be exaggerated and in place. It will never be the lead dog in the whole we will always be someone else looking back and Iditarod is a long race.

What happens after the end of the closing ceremony of Beijing Olympic Games?

Does the morning of the match in the stadium? What about the athletes leave the Olympic Village and return home immediately the next day or stay in Beijing to visit the city? What is on right for them after the conclusion of the Beijing Olympics?

It's a good question. I bet the new announcers talk about today closure. Follow the news on Monday may show athletes celebrate too. I am sure you are allowed to stay a few days more like they were too busy to exercise, and stay in their exercise programs for the past two weeks, to enjoy their stay in China. China needs them (or our government) spend more money there. Chinese authorities will not seek the athletes and teams further until they become a nuisance or no money. The Olympics has been great, and showed the world much of China. Hopefully we can all see that we can get more for your money "for trade and peaceful competition Theater with bullets and violence. Besides, how can prices continue to fall at WalMart, not well done, but the cheap Chinese products? Now the gold metal winners can cope all the press as the winner of the United States have dominated the scene.
